fucking
different
2004-2014 | Idea & realisation: Kristian Petersen
The conceptual „Fucking Different“ series -produced and curated by Kristian Petersen- is about equalities, differences and clichés in the queer community. In more than 60 short films it breaks stereotypes, creates confusion and celebrates diversity.
Fifteen queer crossovers: lesbian filmmakers from Berlin were asked to make a short film about their idea of male gay love and sexuality and, vice-versa, gay men were given the task of making a short film about lesbian sexuality and eroticism.
All genres – animation, documentary, drama – were allowed. Filmmakers were also given a free hand in deciding which form their films would take – either experimental or conventional.
The only parameters to which they were required to adhere were the length of each film – between 3 and 7 minutes – and the format: MiniDV.
The result is an anthology of highly diverse films, primarily concerned with the pinpointing, questioning and deconstruction of clichés – clichés which, in spite of the ostensible proximity of gays and lesbians during the past ten years, appear to persist to a shocking extent in the minds of many in the opposite group. The diversity of the various contributions provides good reason to hope for a thoughtful and informative expansion of our perceptions of certain roles and gender-specific patterns. What do construction workers do in their well-earned breaks? How might Angelina Jolie's and Brad Pitt's relationship have ended? And what really happened between Marilyn Monroe and Joan Crawford during the summer of 1959?
The answers to these and many other interesting questions are provided by twelve queer New York filmmakers. Their films also scrutinize such topics as the difference between the way men and women dream, and how erotic tying a necktie or having a manicure can be.
Following on from the Berlin-based film FUCKING DIFFERENT, Kristian Petersen asked six gay and six lesbian filmmakers from New York to make a short film taking a look at how they envisage the love life of the other sex. Each filmmaker was given a free hand in their choice of format and genre.
The result is a collection of twelve witty, illuminating and erotic short films spanning all genres which conveys the diverse spectrum of queer life in New York. (Berlinale Catalogue text)

In the third edition of the anthology of short films, FUCKING DIFFERENT, 16 gay and lesbian filmmakers describe life and love in Tel Aviv. As in previous editions lesbian filmmakers were asked to visualize their conceptions and observations of gay eroticism and sexuality, just as, conversely, gay filmmakers were asked to explore lesbian love in the Israeli capital. Filmmakers could choose their own topics, genres and narrative approach.
The upshot is a successful mixture of drama, documentary and experimental film on a broad and very entertaining spectrum of topics. The resulting film could easily have been no more than a succession of clichés, prejudices and stereotypical descriptions, but the filmmakers were able to avoid such pitfalls from the outset. The films in this compilation are imaginative, astute and downright sexy. Together they provide an extraordinary insight into female and male sexuality and eroticism. (Berlinale Catalogue text)

This is the fourth film of the conceptual series FUCKING DIFFERENT, produced by Kristian Petersen. The Brazilian version contains a variety of interesting genres. There are twelve stories in which women address the gay world and men address the lesbian universe.
In DO ALMOÇO, Rodrigo Diaz Diaz shows that friendship can hide the most secret desires, and that to achieve them is a delight. The protagonists of FELIZES PARA SEMPRE have been married for years and, amazingly, still get along, living proof that romantic love is not merely the preserve of Hollywood. DEUS DO IMPOSSÍVEL, breaks a conservative taboo and shows that, contrary to what many square people may think, homosexuals are indeed loved by God and can go to church. The world of pop also finds its place in the collection with DYKELAND, about an all-female a rock band. The trilogy 1718, 1972, 2009 tells three stories that cross time and are all linked by a work of art. Desire is also the guiding principle of RONDA. Accompanied by the sound of a delicious tango, Herman Barck proves in FLACA that love can come from the most surprising places. René Guerra explores the memories of a female couple in the delicate CASA. UNDER THE SKIN proves that life’s upheavals are no reason to despair. (Berlinale Catalogue text)

Young, wild and sexy – this is "Fucking Different". What began six years ago in Berlin has become a worldwide phenomenon: gay filmmakers make films about lesbians and lesbian directors about gays. Lesbian, gay and transgender Sex from a new perspective.
In the four earlier films: “Fucking Different Berlin“, “-New York“, “-Tel Aviv“ and “- Sao Paulo“ it was the same city that the filmmakers had in common. In “Fucking Different XXX“ it’s the passion for explicit sex scenes that brought eight international filmmakers together. The eight short films shot in Paris, Berlin and San Francisco are about intensive sex, quick sex, romantic sex, funny sex, the first sex and the last sex. The range goes from a lesbian quickie in the toilet, a bloodthirsty orgy, romantic fisting all the way to wet teenage dreams. The queer filmmaker each made films about „the other gender” and their sexuality. The result is a never seen before look upon sexual tastes and varieties, far from clichés, with a fresh and sometimes humorous approach. Maybe “Fucking Different“ is the queerest film experiment of all times!

The sixth part in the compilation film series Fucking Different breaks new ground. Since 2005 producer and project initiator Kristian Petersen has asked gay and lesbian filmmakers from various cities to make short documentary and fiction films – in each case a lesbian taking on gay topics and vice versa.
Fucking Different XXY intends finally to dissolve the binarity of classic gender identities. Seven transgender filmmakers from all over the world have made short films about aspects of sexuality which are alien to them. The mixture is colourful and diverse and includes documentary contributions from pornographic filmmakers Buck Angel and Mor Vital and experimental approaches by J Jackie Baier and Gwen Haworth who both come from a documentary background. The film series attempts to overturn stereotypes about the ‘other’ and what's ‘normal’ – stereotypes which also exist in the queer community. To quote the film's own motto: break stereotypes, create confusion and celebrate diversity! (Berlinale Catalogue text)
